Preview of Public Day at Animal Behavior Society

You’re in for a special treat with this month’s CAAB Chat, taking place on Tuesday, July 26th at 5pm Mountain Time.

seminar_from_back_pc_3442As you may know, the Animal Behavior Society (ABS) is the professional organization that certifies CAABs and ACAABs, and is the largest organization dedicated to the study of animal behavior.

For a number of years, it’s been a tradition at the annual ABS meeting to organize a Public Day. As the name implies, Public Day is a day of lectures geared and open to the general public to show how Certified Applied Animal Behaviorists and other behavior scientists who are members of the Animal Behavior Society improve our understanding of and our ability to care for our animal friends.

This year, the topic for Public Day at the ABS Meeting at the University of Missouri is “Animals Helping in Society.”  For this CAAB Chat, you’ll be treated to a preview of Public Day presentations from some of the speakers.

You’ll be hearing from Dr. Robin Foster, CAAB, presenter, and organizer of Public Day, about what Public Day is all about, and how you can attend Public Day on July 30th in Columbia MO.

Two of the Public Day speakers –   Dr. Sue McDonnell, CAAB from the University of Pennsylvania and Kristen Collins, M.A., ACAAB, Director of Anti-Cruelty Services for the ASPCA have graciously agreed to give you a preview of their Public Day Presentations.

Dr. McDonnell will be co-presenting with Dr. Foster on “Selection and Retention of Therapy Horses”.  We hear a lot about therapeutic riding programs, but very little on the selection, training, and care of the horses involved.  Sue and Robin will enlighten us.

Kristen Collins will be previewing her work with the always intriguing ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Team on the topic of “Using Helper Dogs to Rehabilitate Canine Victims of Animal Cruelty.”

You’ll also hear from Robin about the other speakers  and topics that complete the Public Day Program –

Dr. Rebecca Johnson: Humans and Animals Together – Health Benefits for Both Ends of the Leash

Dr. Simon Gadbois : The Science of Sniffer Dogs

Dr. Jim Ha, CAAB: Stress and Well-Being in Working Dogs – Principles and Evidence
