Walking the Terminology Tightrope

We all know that the professionals who help people understand and modify their pets’ behaviors come from a variety of backgrounds.  These range from dog training academies to undergraduate or graduate degrees in psychology, social work, animal science, ethology, biology, behavior analysis, veterinary medicine and more.

Not surprisingly each academic discipline has its own terminology and sometimes the same words can have slightly or quite different meanings in different fields. To complicate matters further, the field of professional dog training has also created its own vocabulary, sometimes borrowing terms from scientific disciplines but creating new definitions different from the traditional literature.

These differences make communication even more difficult in an inherently multidisciplinary field that doesn’t always handle diversity well.

In this CAABChat we’ll discuss a selection of terms that seem to be particularly problematic.  To borrow a phrase, words DO matter and it’s well past time that we try to develop a common vocabulary.

Join this interdisciplinary team of behaviorists as we begin this thorny discussion.
